About the Arcade
The Arcade is the shop, studio services, workshop, and activation side of my studio practice. I focus on print methods, primarily screen printing, to engage people in art-making through one-on-one classes and workshops, and collaborate with other artists to create unique screen prints.
I offer print services in my studio on Edgewood Street Northeast. I print on paper, shirts, bandanas, posters, tote bags, and more! All items are hand-printed with water-based inks and offer lots of different options depending on your needs. I can also help consult on your next project; visit the contact page with your orders, requests, or questions. Make sure to include a design file (if applicable) to help me dial in your quote.
We also offer screen exposure services to local artists and makers that want to print on their own! Include your prepared and sized design file, and when you expect to drop off and pick up screens. Screen exposure is a two day process:
Day one: Drop off screens for image clearing and/or degreasing. The screen will be coated with photographic emulsion and allowed to cure over night.
Day two: Stencil printing, screen exposure, and pick-up.
Workshops
I offer workshops to those looking to dip their toe into the world of printmaking! The most popular offerings are the Collaborative Screen Printing Workshop, the CMYK Screen Printing Workshop, and the Print and Color Tote Printing Workshop. Workshops are generally hosted at various locations around DC, including Shop Made in DC. The Collaborative Screen Printing Workshop is what I like to describe as “a palate-cleanser for your brain.” We start with 6-8 pre-exposed screens with imagery ranging from large textures to overall patterns to representational drawings. As a group, we choose which screen and ink color we want to use at a time, learning different in-screen techniques such as split-fountain, selective color, and flocking along the way. Experiment and play with layering and color to make unique prints!
The CMYK Screen Printing Workshop explores more traditional methods of screen printing. A color photograph has been separated into its cyan, magenta, yellow, and black layers, with each layer being exposed separately on a screen. We will first reassemble this color photograph through screen printing, and then explore how we can alter the image by adjusting the layer order and mask different areas of the image while printing. Learn how color images are reproduced and how to alter these images while printing!
The Print and Color Tote Printing Workshop is a fun, low-key way to learn about screen printing on fabric and then customize your print. First choose your tote color, and then print the line-drawing image on the tote. Once the ink is dry, you can color in the printed image. A great way to learn, socialize, and relax!
Classes
I teach both one-on-one classes and small group classes, and each class is project-based according to your interests. I walk you through the entire process of screen printing, and participants have the option of taking their screen to continue working at home! Let me know what you’re interested in, and I can tailor a class to you and your needs.
We start with an in-studio consultation to go over what you want to print, what you want to learn, how to prepare your design, and source materials for our print day. On our print day, we will go over how to coat screens with emulsion, expose the stencils onto the screens, register the screen to the items you want to print, print, and finally rinse and clear the screen. The whole class takes around 3 hours and the cost starts at $300 (negotiable depending on the scale of the project).
Collaboration
I work with fellow artists to create limited editions of prints. Artists will start with an overall concept and consult with us about different print methods to bring these works to fruition. The goal is not to We work together, often employing nonlinear print methods, to create unique sets of prints. Let me know if you have a project you want to see in print!
